about st. andrew's basilica

The beautiful and serene St. Andrew's Basilica in Alappuzha is symbolic of cultural and religious harmony. From the eye catching gold altar to the arresting statue of St. Sebastian, the church is a sight to behold. One of the most important pilgrimage sites in Kerala, the church brings together Christians and Hindus under one roof. Shrouded in an intriguing past, the church was given the status of a Basilica in the year 2010. Initially built by the Portuguese in the 16th century, the church was again rebuilt in the year 1884 by Fr. Jacoma Fenicio S.J, a Portuguese priest. The honourable priest was also known as Arthunkal Veluthachan, translated as an Arunthkal fair skinned father. It was believed that the priest had the power to cure illness of the body and the mind. As per local legends, Fr. Fenicio, a friend of the Hindu God Ayyapa was considered an authority on Hindu traditions and cultures. After the death of Fr. Fenicio, the church was rebuilt again facing west and towards the golden, sandy beach shores. The gorgeous idol of St. Sebastian was brought here in 1647 and placed here. The highly revered idol is carried from the church to the beach and then back on the colourful occasion of St. Sebastian's feast. Lasting for 11 days, this lovely festival witnesses a number of tourists and devotees thronging the church.
