about st stephen's church

St Stephen's Church has a fascinating Gothic structure which still retains its Victorian feel. The entire structure is made of wood, its carvings and architecture wonderfully done. Owing to the woodwork, it remains pleasantly cool all the time. It is said that the wood was acquired from Tipu Sultan’s palace in the colonial times in 1829, the year of its establishment.

Dating back to 19th century, its foundation stone was laid by Stephen Rumbold Lushington. He was the Governor of Madras at the time and was keen on having a church built in the precincts of Ooty. The construction of St Stephen's Church started on April 23, 1829, the birthday of King George IV, while it was laid open for public on Easter Sunday in 1831. The painting that depicts The Last Supper is a major draw here, while the stained glass windows are a different lure altogether.
