The story behind the Chaitra Navratri is that once there was a powerful demon Mahishasura, who had gained power of eternity by worshipping Lord Shiva. He had become immortal and there was no way he could get killed by any weapon. He misused this boon and started killing lot of innocent people on Earth. To put an end to the life of this demon, goddess Durga was created by Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. She was given power by all these gods, the power of Shiva formed her head, Yama formed hair, Vishnu formed arms, that of Indra the waist, and of Brahma the feet. She choose lion as her vehicle and fought with the demon for nine days and on tenth day she beheaded him. Hence, she is often referred as Mahishasura-mardini or the slayer of Mahishasura.
Chaitra Navratri or Vasanta Navaratri is celebrated on first nine days of the bright half of the month of Chaitra (starting from the day after Amavasya). As per the Indian lunar calendar, this usually occurs in late March or early April. It is nine days celebration dedicated to nine forms of Shakti. It marks the beginning of Hindu New Year along with onset of spring.
