If you are planning a trip to Lahaul-Spiti district, here are a few not to be missed attractions along with adventure activities. The base to visit this place are only Keylong and Kaza. So, here are two options to choose from, one starting from Keylong and the other from Kaza.

Option 1

If you are staying in Keylong, start early morning and head to Guru Ghantal Monastery (8 km from Keylong), regarded as the oldest monastery in Lahaul. The visit will take around 1 to 2 hours. After that you can visit Keylong museum

Also known as the museum of Tribal Art, it is situated in Keylong region. The museum features archaeological findings, Thangka Paintings and objects of everyday use as they existed before the development of modern mechanised equipments in the district. Apart from this, it also houses manuscripts in Bhoti Scripts and Tankri documents. There is an auditorium within the museum premises for hosting cultural events. Make sure you are aware of the Keylong museum opening and closing time and the day it operates and remain close on.

Since there are hardly any restaurants in this area, it is preferable to get packed lunches from your hotel in Keylong. After lunch you can try Yak Safari. One of the most exciting adventure activities in Spiti, Yak safari is truly a one of a kind experience. You can easily hire the Yak to see the flora and fauna of trans-Himalayan desert. This safari is a must here as you won't find this anywhere else so easily. Apart from Yak Safaris, horse safaris are also conducted in this area.

After the Yak Safari, go back to your hotel in Keylong for dinner and rest.

Option 2

If you are staying in Kaza, head to Tabo Monastery. Often referred to as the 'Ajanta of the Himalayas', this beautiful monastery is perched at an altitude of 3050 meters.

Situated in Spiti valley, this 10th century monastery was founded by the great scholar, Richen Zangpo. Declared by UNESCO as the World Heritage Site, the monastery houses more than 6 lamas. Apart from this, it also features a rare collection of scriptures, pieces of art, wall paintings of both Thangkas and Stucco. At a distance of 45 km from the town of Kaza, it is surrounded by mud brick wall with 9 temples, 23 chortens, monk’s residence and a guest house.

Remember to get a packed lunch from your hotel in Kaza. After lunch you can go to Pin Valley National Park, located 85 km from Kaza.

Located in the Pin valley of Spiti, Pin Valley National Park is situated at height of 12,000 m above sea level. Given the high altitude and extreme temperatures, the vegetation here is scant, consisting mostly of alpine trees and patches of Himalayan cedar. The park is a home to quite a few endangered species like the endemic Himalayan Ibex, Snow leopard, the mighty Bharal or Blue Sheep and Lynx. For more information check out our page on Pin Valley National Park.

Head back to your hotel or guesthouse for dinner and rest.
