There is a reason why Mahabaleshwar is always included in most Maharashtra holiday tour packages and is considered the favourite getaway from Mumbai, Mahabaleshwar offers the much needed respite from the heat and humidity of the big cities in Maharashtra. Famous for its lake, temple and the unique hills and points in Mahabaleshwar, there’s a lot you can see if you’re in town only for a day. Choose your experience depending on how much time you have and the kind of holiday you have in mind.

Assuming you start your day early in the morning, you can try heading to Elephant’s Head Point for a beautiful Western sunrise. Rock-formations here are settled in a way which makes them look like an elephant’s head and trunk, lending the place it’s unique name. Enjoy a picnic or simply trek up for those breathtaking photographs! You can hire a cab, but you’ll still need to walk a good 1 km from the car parking to reach the main area.

Your next stop could ideally be the Mahabaleshwar Temple in Old Mahabaleshwar, only about 5 km from Elephant’s Head Point. Built by the Chanda Rao More dynasty, the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, with his physical incarnation in the black-stone lingam being the central deity here. Head here to explore some intricate carvings and a fascinating history, apart from the striking spiritual aura that is filled with beautiful myths and legends.

It will almost be lunchtime now, so head out for a great meal at Grapevine, a cosy restaurant in the main city on Masjid Road. It should take you about half an hour to reach here from Old Mahabaleshwar, so do factor in the driving time. There are no dearths for places to eat in Mahabaleshwar and you will be spoilt with choices ranging from Parsi and Continental cuisines. Have your fill before you head out again!

Next on your list could be some shopping at the Town Bazaar, you can simply stroll around to enjoy the local flavour of the town. Buy jams, preserves and fresh strawberries - the trademark of Mahabaleshwar. Do visit the Holy Cross Church while you’re here, an old building dating back to 1831. A great place for some complete calm and peace, the church is fondly known as the “church in the hills” or also, sometimes, “toy church” for its beautiful but tiny structure. This church is open between 10 AM and 6 PM, so make sure you make it in time.

Now, for a truly touristy experience of Mahabaleshwar, boating at Venna Lake is a must. Take a casual stroll around the serene lake or sit back and enjoy a laid-back boating trip here, while you click away with those cameras. Surrounded by small eateries, the lake promises a fun-filled holiday feel.

After a long, tiring day, a hot meal will go a long way in helping you unwind. Head to the Angaare Restaurant in Brightland Holiday Village, about 8 km from the main city. You’ll love the live grill here, with a brilliant outdoorsy feel to it. If you’re up for some groovy fun, the Electrique Mist located closeby near Kates Point is the place to be for experiencing the nightlife in Mahabaleshwar.

With this action-packed itinerary, your day in Mahabaleshwar comes to a draw. Tuck into your bed and sleep with dreams of your exciting day that was in this wonderful town!
