Sonamarg is literally a “meadow of gold”, just 42 km from Pahalgam, you will gasp in wonderment at the golden light that glints from the snow-capped peaks when lazy sun rays fall on them. A popular trekking destination, it is also known as the gateway to Ladakh, being very close to the Zoji-La Pass. The town is home to several beautiful lakes like Gangabal, Vishansar, Gadsar, Satsar and Kishansar, which are ideal to explore and maybe even picnic around. If you are planning a trip here for just a day, we have a suitable itinerary just for your trip to Sonamarg.

Sonamarg is primarily a trekking destination. There are a number of short treks that you can easily choose to do during the morning. There aren’t many eating options available, but you will find small eateries and small hotels, that provide simple north Indian fare as well as the local Kashmiri flavours.

For the rest of the day, you can choose to spend the second day just roaming around Sonamarg, checking out the main bazaar (which also sells Kashmiri handicrafts at cheap rates), talking to the locals and exploring the landscape. You can plan an excursion to Baltal, that lies 15 km north of Sonamarg. It is a small picturesque little valley nestled at the foot of the Zojila mountain. It is usually a camping spot for pilgrims on their way to Amarnath.
