Here is a plan for a 3 day trip to Shillong, a beautiful place in northeast India. Most of the tourist destinations can be covered in this span of time.

Day 1

A visit to Shillong can never be complete without a visit to the famous Shillong Golf Course. So, visit this place of sprawling green grass first and experience the legacy of the colonial era. This golf course is quite near the city of Shillong but it will take some hours if you want to tour the whole course.

After coming back from the golf course, have a quick cup of tea and some snacks at a roadside stall as you are going to have a long day ahead. Post that you could visit the Mawphlang Sacred Forest, which is on the way to Cherrapunji. Explore the monoliths and the rich diversity of the forest.

If you are visiting Shillong, it is a must to visit the famous town of Cherrapunji. Travelling to this place will take less than two hours. The journey itself will present many mesmerizing views as you drive through the winding hill roads. Once you reach there, explore the caves and the living root bridges of this wonderful town.

Drive further south to the village of Mawlynnong, which is considered to be one of the cleanest villages in Asia. Have your packed lunch and if you hadn't packed any, look for restaurants (which you are very unlikely to find, as you are on the outskirts of the city) or any roadside stall.

By the time you reach Shillong, it will already be dark. Since Shillong doesn’t have much of a nightlife, have dinner at your hotel or go out to Ginger Restaurant or Bamboo Hut and have a sumptuous meal before retiring for the night.

Day 2

Wake up early in the morning on your 3 day trip to Shillong and head off to the popular Shillong Peak. You can go on a short trek to the highest peak in Shillong while the morning mist still shrouds the view below. Watching the rising sun from the peak will perhaps be the most enchanting view you've ever seen.

On the way back, witness the beauty of the Elephant Falls. Make the best of your time at this splendid waterfall and play in the cold water. It will rejuvenate your body, which will be tired from the trek.

After a heavy, delicious lunch, drive to the famous Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Cultures. Walk down the corridors of this museum and know more about the culture and traditions of northeast India, as you glance at the numerous artifacts on display in the museum.

This can be followed by a visit to the Laitumkhrah region, which will give you the opportunity to spend a laid back afternoon near the Spread Eagle Falls. You should also pay a visit to the Shillong Catholic Cathedral, located near by.

Though Shillong’s nightlife has nothing much to talk about, if you really are in the mood for clubbing, Cloud 9 is one place where you will see young crowd dancing and enjoying the night. Have dinner at a restaurant near your place or stay in and enjoy a good night’s sleep.

Day 3

On day 3 of your 3 day trip to Shillong, after breakfast at your hotel, head out to the Mahadev Khola Dham, a Shiva cave temple which is 5 km away from Shillong. There are also many other smaller temples nearby. Have lunch a little early as it is going to be a busy and hectic afternoon.

As it's the last day of your vacation in Shillong, you will surely feel like buying souvenirs. The best place to experience the hustle and bustle of Shillong is at the the popular Bara Bazaar, also known as Lewduh.

Continue on your praying-spree with a trip to the Shillong Baptist Church. Offer your prayers in this church and experience peace and serenity as you pray at the altar of this holy place. While coming back visit the Chrysalis Art Gallery, a delight for all art lovers and witness the numerous works of arts by the artists of northeastern India.

End your vacation with a tour of the Butterfly Museum and witness the number of butterflies, from the private collection of Wankhar Riatsamthiah. After seeing this colourful display of beauty, head off to Royal Heritage Tripura Castle Restaurant for a nice dinner of Chinese cuisine.
