A visit to one of the most popular summer getaways is bound to be filled with excitement and fun. Considered to be the Queen of the hills, Shimla, the erstwhile summer capital of the British promises you a memorable holiday. Here is a short three day itinerary for your trip to Shimla.

Day 1

There could be no better way to start your morning than to sample the finest Choley Bhature of Shimla at Ram Prasad Choley Bhature Wale at the mall. Known far and wide for its lip smacking Choley Bhature, its best to head here for breakfast as all his fare is polished off by noon.

After the hearty breakfast, take the trek up to Jakhoo Temple and work off your calories on the way. Dedicated to Lord Hanuman, the ancient temple is a must visit. The trip up the hill and back is going to take about an hour and a half, leaving you famished, so we advise you to have a lemonade from the numerous vendors outside the temple before heading back. Make sure you get the lemonade made in mineral water to avoid an upset tummy later.

Once you are back at the Mall, take a look inside the Christ Church, paying special attention to the beautiful frescos depicting the virtues of Faith, Charity, Hope, Fortitude, Patience and Humility. Soaked in serenity, the church is a delight to visit.

When all the exploration has made you hungry, head to one of the restaurants that dot the Mall Road Shimla and have a great meal. We recommend Devicos, Baljees or Fascination, but if any other restaurant catches your fancy, do eat there and be assured of a mouth watering meal.

After lunch, you may want to go for an exciting shopping spree. The main market of Shimla, known as The Mall is bustling with energy. With umpteen shops lining the area, you can head in any direction and you’ll be treated to a number of delights. From the chaotic Tibetan market to the dazzling lakkad bazaar, shopaholics are in for a bundle of surprises. Wooden items, woollen clothes and a plethora of souvenirs are some of the things you can pick up here.

Once you have recharged your batteries with a thrilling shopping spree, head to the Summer Hill for a long walk and explore the magnificent Viceroy Lodge which is surely going to transport you into a world of fantasy. When you walk do make it a point to pause and watch the sun go down the hills. This beautiful sight is sure to stay with you for a lifetime. Or if you aren’t the mood to walk, you can sit at any of the lovely coffee shops and enjoy a refreshing cup of coffee while watching the sun set.

End your day with dinner at Silver Oak and treat yourself to Chinese or Mughlai food, or head to the twin restaurant of Ashiana & Goofa and sample some traditional Himachali food. Here is a list of restaurants in Shimla, if you are interested in trying some more places. The delicious food will double your sleep quotient after the tiring day you have had and we are sure the night is going to get some thick sleep for you!

Day 2

On your second day in Shimla, begin with a hearty breakfast and head to Kufri for some sporting fun. Located at a distance of about 18 kms from Shimla on National Highway No.22, Kufri is thronged by tourists for adventure activities like hiking, skiing, horse riding and zorbing amongst others. Enjoy beautiful views of forest covered mountains, snow capped peaks and splashing fountains while taking a stroll in the numerous parks here like Himalayan Nature Park, Indira Tourist Park and Mashru Park.

Once you have had your dose of adrenalin at Kufri, you can head to Fagu Topfor some relaxation, which is at a distance of 8 kms from here. Have a delicious lunch at the Revolving Restaurant at Snow King Retreat while enjoying the panoramic 180 degree views of the Shivalik Range, an experience which is one of its kind in Himachal. Take long walks enjoying the unspoilt natural beauty of Fagu and make sure you collect some pine cones on the way, they make beautiful showpieces for your home!

While heading back to Shimla, take as detour and head to Chadwick Falls, a famous tourist spot in Shimla which you must not miss. Sip steaming tea from the local vendors while you enjoy these beautiful falls cascading down in silvery sheets of water in the midst of mountains covered in thick green foliage. If you still have the energy for fun, take a splash in the icy cold waters!

Still not tired? Head to the Mall Road and do some strolling, looking, bargaining and shopping. While you are at it, do try the famous Gol-gappe and chaat at Sharma Ji’s, if the idea of street food makes your mouth water!

After a long day of sightseeing and fun, what could be more relaxing than a warm bed back at the hotel.

Day 3

Your third day in Shimla begins with mesmerising views of the picture perfect town. Blue skies, refreshing greenery and a thousand colours creating a gorgeous riot. After a wholesome breakfast, you could either choose to stay in Shimla or head out for another day of sightseeing.

If shopping is on your mind, you can explore the mall road to the hilt. From lower bazaar to tibetan market, there is a lot in store of shopaholics. Wooden artifacts, Himachali shawls and the usual knick knacks hill stations offer.

If on the other hand, you’d like to head out, you can make your way to Naldehra. Home to one of the most beautiful golf courses in India, Naldehra is certainly a delight to visit. If teeing off is not your cup of tea, you could try your hand at trekking and horse riding.

The craggy, rocky paths here make for perfect trekking routes. Offering a spectacular view of the valley below, you’ll be stunned by the sheer beauty of the unexplored. Trekking, golfing aside, if lazing about is just what you wanted, you won’t be disappointed. As the sun shines down brightly, you can simply lie down and enjoy the fresh breeze, dancing trees and the soft chattering of birds.

For those grumbling stomachs, you could either head to the golf club restaurant or pack in a big picnic basket from your hotel. A quiet, lovely picnic in the midst of nowhere is nothing less than a heavenly.

As you head back to town, the sun will slowly be making its way behind the mountains. With the chilly breeze playing hide and seek, it’s time to bid adieu to this energetic hill station. But, not before you settle in for a hot cuppa coffee at Ashiana and then head for some sizzlers at Fascination.

A walk back to the hotel is filled with memories of your fun filled trip in Shimla. As you make plans of another return trip, don’t forget to take in the gorgeous views of the lit up town. Booking from the available Shimla tour packages is a quick way to plan a vacation here.
