about summer palace (yiheyuan)

The Summer Palace is a popular royal garden and tourist attraction in China. The garden came into existence in the 1750s and was once the summer resort for the emperors. The palace features a number of architecturally distinct buildings, halls, pavilions, bridges and corridors dispersed among the elegant gardens. The palace covers an area of 2.9 square kilometers, three-quarters of which is water. The palace is divided into four areas: the Court Area, Front Hill Area, Rear Hill Area and Lake Area.
The East Palace Gate of the palace opens into the Court Area. The front hill area has the maximum constructions. The lake area covers the most part of the palace and covers major attractions like Seventeen-Arch Bridge, Bronze Ox, Nanhu Island, Hall of Embracing the Universe, Spacious Pavilion, Pavilion of Bright Scenery, Marble Boat, Suzhou Market Street, etc. As compared to the Front Hill Area, the rear hill area is quite. There are less number of constructions here, so the landscape is more attractive and serene here.
