about swaminatha swami temple

The temple, as it is now, was built by the early Chola kings. A man-made hill of stone has been erected for Subrahmanya’s sanctum, to which 60 steps lead up from the ground level. There are inscriptions in the temple referring to renovation activities by Vikkitha Chola (1120-1136) and to grants made to the temple by the Nayak kings, Sevappa Nayak and Krishna Deva Raya (15th and 16th centuries). Saint-composer Arunagirinathar also sang the Rathabandham — lines which, when written down, take the shape of a ratham, or chariot. These verses can be seen etched in the shape of a chariot on the wall of the middle prakaram.

Every Thursday, the idol is adorned in a royal costume: a golden body vest and a gold crown, apart from a multitude of jewels, and the deity holds a diamond stud- ded vel. Devotees like to say that no matter what he is dressed as, Swaminatha charms. When bathed in vibhuti (sacred ash), he looks like a gnani (an enlightened person); when bathed in sandal paste, he has the freshness of a child; and when dressed as a king, his majesty is awesome. The base on which Swaminatha stands is shaped unusually, akin to the base of a Shivalingam (the avudayar). The inference is that Shiva and Swaminatha have merged in this idol.
