about tara devi temple

Tara Devi Temple is one of the most significant temples of the area, which stands on the right of the NH22 highway as one takes a right from Shoghi. The ascent is simultaneously breathtaking and nerve-racking. Various histories date the temple as either 200 or 500 years old. There is a story that goes this way - a vision of Tara Devi appeared to the Raja of Junga on the mountain and he immediately built a temple on that spot. In the two main festival months, October and November, the temple is overcrowded; at all other times it makes for a peaceful visit. The 360 degree views of Shimla from the top are very rewarding.

A prominent deity of the sect of Tibetan Buddhism, Goddess Tara is also known as Ma Bhagwati Tara Devi and is believed to be one of Durga Ma's (Goddess Durga's) nine sisters. The temple which is considered to be about 250 years old, has another myth associated with it. According to the myth, Goddess Tara was brought in to Shoghi from Bengal by a king from the Sen Dynasty. Her wooden idol was established here over time and she is still worshipped following some age old rituals, especially by heirs of the Sen dynasty. Elaborate prayers are offered to the goddess especially during Ashtami, which also sees competitions like wrestling as part of the rituals performed to honour the goddess. It attracts a lot of footfall from locals, tourists and devotees.
