about temples of talakad

Right by the left bank of river Kaveri, 45 km from Mysore, the point where it takes a sharp bend, lies the twice-cursed-and-lived-to-tell-the-tale town of Talakad. Once a veritable desert and buried not only under the weight of sands from the banks of river Kaveri, but also folklore and mythological tales that echo from the unearthed Temples of Talakad, Talakad’s temples are a magic carpet ride of legends, antiquity and religious fervor.

Every year sandhills, at the rate of 9 to 10 feet, would advance upon the city (lifted by the south-west monsoon winds), eventually leading to the old city of Talakad being completely submerged under the sands.

It was in early part of 20th century that the two temples of Gaurisankara and Anandesvara were discovered and from here the entire saga behind the temples literally unearthed, fragment by fragment. While some have been traced back to the Ganga dynasty, yet others date back to the times of Chidānandasvāmi and the Wodeyar dynasty.

There are actually a total of 5 temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, representing his 5 different avatars or faces and together they are called Pancha Pathi, and once every 12 years a fair is held, Panchalinga Darshana, when the temples and Shiva’s different avatars are honored and celebrated. Sublimely beautiful and literally preserved through the sands of time, the temples of Talakad are nothing short of spellbinding and enchanting, unlike the curse whose powers slipped away like sand held tightly in your hand.
