about tharangambadi

A place where sea waves whistle tunes and the town’s theme song is sung by waves crashing against the rocks like a steady drum roll, Tranquebar or Tharangambadi as its now known, is where time seems to have frozen at the time Danes called it their land. A small port town, little way off Karaikal, Tranquebar was actually founded by the Danish East India Company and was the seat of Protestantism when Bartholomaeus Ziegenbalg and Heinich Pluetschau set their foot in India and settled down in Tranquebar as it was known then and still is in Danish. In fact, there is a statue commemorating Bartholomaeus Ziegenbalg in Tranquebar.

Strewn with rich reminders of its colonial past, Tranquebar was once upon a time a port of immense significance before losing out its star status to the railhead at Nagapattinam. There is a beautiful Danish church that is a must visit along with the fortress of solitude, Fort Dansborg, which is now a museum of Tranquebar’s colonial past. Filled with fascinating objects and armaments from the times of the Danish colonizers, Fort Dansborg, surrounded by the sea on two sides, is must stopover.
