about the government museum and art gallery

Chandigarh's Government Museum and Art Gallery is a multidimensional historical extravaganza where you can see everything from dinosaurs to the time Chandigarh came into being.

Begin your exploration with the Natural History Museum where real size dinosaurs lurk from behind shrubs and prepare to be amazed by the findings on display including fossils and prehistoric remains. The Natural History Wing in the Evolution of Man section of the museum, lays out the details of the evolution of mammals with striking fossilised remains, paintings and graphics.

The Gandhara sculpture section contains 627 sculptures on display which date back to the early 2 CE. India received these artifacts from the Lahore Museum at the time of partition. You can also read manuscripts from the 16 and 18 CE, including the numerous Sikh manuscripts recovered at the time of partition.

If you are one for appreciating ancient Indian art, then Indian Miniature Painting section will be quite to your liking with its collection of miniature paintings from the Pahari School of Art, Rajasthani and Sikh art. The contemporary Indian Art section displays works of some of the pioneers of modern Indian art like M.F. Hussain, Amrita Shergill, Tyeb Mehta to name a few.
