about the heritage walk

The Heritage Walk around the White Town — beginning at the southern end of Goubert Salai, also known as Beach Road — will take you past most of Puducherry’s sights: the Place de la Republique (Gandhi’s statue has replaced Dupleix’s), the Lighthouse, the French War Memorial, the statue of Joan of Arc, the Church of Our Lady of the Angels (3 Surcouf Street), the Pondicherry Museum and the Government Gardens. Notable sights in the Tamil Quarter include the Sacred Heart Cathedral on South Boulevard, and the Manakkula Vinayakar Temple behind Raj Niwas. INTACH offers 2-hr guided heritage walks on request, which begin at 4 pm from Le Café, located on Beach Road. The cost is INR 1,000 for a group of 4-8. On other days the walk is by appointment only. The tour includes a visit to the French Quarter.
