about the thousand pillar temple

The Thousand Pillar Temple is a highly sacred South Indian temple that was built by the Kakatiyas. The architectural marvels seen here are noteworthy. It is believed that the temple was built by King Rudra Deva in 1163 AD. It is a specimen of the Kakatiyan style of architecture of the 12th century.

The temple was destroyed by the Tughlaq dynasty during their invasion of South India. It consists of a main temple and several other buildings. There are one thousand pillars in the building and the temple, but no pillar obstructs one from seeing the idols of god. There are three shrines here, of Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and Lord Surya.
