about theatre royal

Opened in 1837, Theatre Royal in Hobart was designed by Peter Degraves at the insistence of the town's business leaders to establish a permanent theatre for the upcoming colony. The theatre has withstood the test of time and been through public crticism, a devastating fire and refurbishing.

Many notable Australian and international artists have performed at the theatre and have etched their name in the history of this place. Today, the theatre stands as a testimony to the country's history and is the biggest center for performing arts. It showcases an annual program that includes dance, music and drama and has been called "a drama of a theatre" by Noel Coward. The theatre is also available for hire by local companies and amateur artists for shows and events.
