about thirunelli temple

Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the history of the temple dates back to 3000 years. Archives and research have shown that Thirunelli Temple was an important spiritual centre during the reign of Bhaskara Ravi Varma, a Chola king ( 962–1019 CE). It remained largely inaccessible due to impassable mountains and thick forest cover. Today, the temple is also known as 'Sahyamala Kshetram' or 'Kashi of the South'.

The temple has beautiful granite columns which add an aesthetic appeal to the whole architecture. A stream runs beside the temple, which provides water for the temple usage. The temple also has a pond, at the centre of which is a stone slab with the impression of Lord Vishnu's feet.

Amidst dense forests it is a gorgeous place. Avoid late evening visits as you might encounter elephants on the way.

This temple is a must visit if if you do not possess a religious bent of mind. Unfortunately the premises do not allow non-Hindus inside. The grounds around are teeming with wildlife. The river is especially beautiful
