about gauri somnath temple

Gauri Somnath Temple can be reached by a long flight of steps cut into the hill-face west of the bridge, clearly visible from the mainland. On crossing the bridge, the steps lie a little way away to your left. The red temple, strewn with antiquities that the ASI has tried to label, is famous for its truly enormous jet black, possibly granite, linga.

According to local legend, the linga was made of white stone and whoever gazed into it could see the image of his next birth. Aurangzeb, thus gazing, was rewarded with the sight of a pig. Enraged, he threw the linga into fire, turning it black. You can climb two storeys up the temple and see distant views from narrow windows.
