about tomb of ghaus mohammed

The Tomb of Ghous Mohammed is another prominent tourist attraction in Gwalior. It is located in the old Town of Hazira. The Tomb belongs to the Afghan prince, Ghous Mohammed who later turned into a sufi saint. It is said that he helped Babar aquire the Gwalior Fort.

It was constructed during the reign of Mughal Emperor Akbar in 16th century. A true example of Mughal architecture, the structure holds great importance in the history of the country. The walls of the Tomb has been carved using pierced stone technique and a number of Chattris in Blue tiles covers the Tomb. The intricate carvings and the latticework are also something to watch for in the edifice.

Set in a lovely garden and backed by a cemetery of the saint’s devotees, the tomb is also the site of the annual Tansen Music Festival (Nov-Dec). The great musician is buried near his spiritual master, under the tamarind tree whose leaves were said to have sweetened his voice. Few visitors can resist plucking leaves from the tree in the hope that it will do the same for them. The festival alone is worth a visit to the city.
