I am planning a road trip from Delhi to Leh during April end. Do you have any tips or suggestions?

Frequented by adventure seekers and nature lovers all year-round, Leh is a prominent tourist destination. Other than the mind-blowing landscapes, it also boasts of beautiful monasteries and the magnificent Leh Palace. Situated at an altitude of 3524 m above the sea level, it is among the highest motorable passes in the world. The influence of Tibetan culture can easily be seen on the lifestyle of the locals. Owing to extreme climatic conditions, tourists must be physically fit and need to take some precautions while on a road trip to Leh.

There are two ways through will you can reach Leh -

Route 1: Srinagar to Leh

You can choose to travel from Srinagar to Leh. The way leading to Leh comprises of undulating mountain terrains, war memorial, monasteries and beautiful hamlets. The landscapes on the way are sure to mesmerise you.

Distance - 434 km

Best time to Visit - Early May till end of October. (Depending on the weather)

Route - Srinagar – Sonmarg – Zozi La – Drass – Kargil – Mulbek – Lamayaru – Saspol – Leh

Petrol Pumps on the Srinagar-Leh Highway - The first petrol pump is at Mangam, which is around 32 km from Srinagar. You will find the next petrol pump at Sonamarg, which is 48 km ahead of Mangam. Be sure that the tank is fuel as the next Petrol Pump will be Kargil at a distance of about 124 kms. Another petrol pump is at Mulbekh, which is 40 km from Kargil.

ATM machines on Srinagar-Leh Highway - You will find ATM machines in Ganderbal, Drass and Kargil.

Mechanic Shop - There are mechanic shops in Ganderbal, Sonamarg and Kargil.

Route 2: Manali to Leh

On the way, you will find many high mountain passes, hairpin bends, scenic valleys and narrow passes. The beauty of this destination is sure to mesmerise you and will make you gape in awe.

Distance - 490 Km

Best time to Visit - June to September

Route - Manali – Rohtang – Gramphu – Kokhsar – Keylong – Jispa – Darcha – Zingzingbar – Baralacha La – Bharatpur – Sarchu – Gata Loops – Nakee La – Lachulung La – Pang - Tanglang La – Gya - Upshi - Karu – Leh
Petrol Pumps on the Manali-Leh Highway - The first petrol pump is in Tandi, which is around 110 km from Manali. Next petrol pump is at Karu, which is around 345 kms from Tandi.

ATM machines on Manali-Leh Highway - There is only one ATM at Keylong. It is suggested that you carry sufficient cash with you.
