about tirumala venkateswara temple

The Tirumala Venkateswara Temple Tirupati is the most visited temple by Hindus, along with being the second richest temple in the world. Located on the seventh hill of the Tirupati hills, it lies on the southern banks of Sri Swami Pushkarini. The seven peaks of the Tirumala Hills represent the seven heads of Adisesha.

The Tirumala Venkateswara Temple Tirupati showcases Dravidian styles of architecture, with exquisitely-carved doorways, mandapams and shrines. During the rule of Vijayanagar Kingdom, a lot of gold was donated to the temple which enabled the Vimana (inner shrine) and the roofing to be plated with gold. The main door is called the Padi Kavali Maha Dwara, that features a quadrangular base. A number of gods like Hanuman,  Vaishnava, Kevale Narasimha and Lakshmi Narasimha can also be seen here.

The Deity

The inner temple or vimana houses the main deity, Lord Sri Venkateswara, who stands directly beneath a gilt dome called the Ananda Nilaya Divya Vimana. This exquisitely made deity is believed to be self-manifested. Lord Venkateswara bears Sri Lakshmi Devi on his right chest and Sri Padmavathi Devi on his left chest.

The Legend

For Vaishnavites, there is no place in the universe equal to Tirumala Venkateswara Temple Tirupati, the place Lord Vishnu chose as an alternative to Vaikuntha, his heavenly home. According to a Puranic legend, an angry Lakshmi once left Vishnu. Unable to find her, the grief-struck lord withdrew to an anthill located on this hill. He later married Laxmi's incarnation but, since ‘Lakshmi’ had left him, Lord Vishnu had no money for the wedding and had to borrow from Kuber. Devotees making offerings at Tirumala believe they are helping the lord repay his debt. According to Hindu Mythology, the Sastras, Puranas, Sthala Mahatyams and Alwar hymns unequivocally declare that one can only attain mukti in the Kali Yuga by worshipping Venkata Nayaka or Sri Venkateswara.

Darshan and Facilities

Around 50,000 pilgrims visit the Tirumala Venkateswara temple everyday, so Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) has organised efficient ways to ensure smooth movement of the pilgrims by providing different kinds of Darshan. The entry for the Darshan is through Vaikuntam Queue Complex which is a series of interconnected halls that leads to the main temple.

The Queue Complex halls are clean, spacious and airy and TTD provides a wide range of facilities in the complex. The various activities of Tirumala Venkateswara Temple Tirupati include prasadam, hair tonsuring, hundi, arjitha seva and thulabharam. Festivals like Vaikuntha Ekadasi, Rama Navami, Brahmotsavam  and Janmashtami are celebrated with great splendor, with thousands and thousands of pilgrims taking part in the festivities every year.

Online Booking

You can opt for online booking for darshan at this famous temple at least 3 days prior to the date of visit and maximum 90 days in advance, so if you are planning a visit to here and want to avoid long queues, make sure you have advance e-darshan bookings at the temple's official website.
