1 person found this answer useful Useful ?Yes

Here are the top 10 reasons to visit Chennai. Smallest among the four largest Indian metros, the cultural capital of India has much to offer. Come, take a look:

1. Mylapore

Mylapore, the 7th-century Pallava Port, is an interesting traditional part of Chennai. Mylapore’s landmark is the Shiva temple called Kapaleeswarar Koil and its huge temple tank.

The Portuguese established the settlement of Santhome (San Thomé) here in the early 16th century. The name Santhome derives from this area’s association with St Thomas, one of the 12 apostles of Jesus. You can also opt for Mylapore Heritage Walk, one of the most famous walking tours in India.

2. Marina Beach

Don’t miss the Marina beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in India, constructed as an Italian-style promenade. The best time to come is sunrise, when you can avoid the crowds and vendors. An impressive row of Indo-Saracenic buildings lines the entire 5-km stretch opposite the Marina.

5. George Town

Chennai’s 500 years of church architecture can be accessed at George Town and around Santhome. The East India Company purportedly erected the first ever Protestant Church east of the Suez at Fort St George in 1680, St. Mary Church, one of the most beautiful churches in India.

There is no place quite like Chennai for sari shopping—a rich gorgeous silk sari, of course. Visit the legendary Nalli Chinnasamy Chetty near Panagal Park, the 100-year old Radha Silk House in Mylapore, Tarunee Loka and Sundari Silks and Chennai Silks in T Nagar. These are all famous shopping hubs in the city.
