about tower of london

The moment you enter Tower of London, don't be surprised if you find yourself traveling back in time to the medieval ages, back when people were executed for their smoking habits here. It is a compound of 20 towers filled with the saga of London's incredible history. What makes it even more fantastical, is the presence of actors in historical costumes and events themed historically.

White tower is the oldest of all and was actually built by William the Conqueror in 1078 to keep the population of native Saxon's in check, but later as more towers were added, it evolved into a prison & site for execution. A number of queens were executed out here including Lady Jane Grey and Anne Boleyn and there are plaques in Tower Green that actually mark the spot where they were executed. The rather grisly and sinister named Bloody Tower has displays on the people who were held captive here including Sir Walter Raleigh's study, who was held a prisoner here for 13 years.
Held in the Jewel Tower are the Crown Jewels, British monarch's ceremonial emblems of royalty, usually on display when not in use. If gruesome looking military weapons fascinate you, then make your way to the Royal Armoury where armors, swords, halberds, etc are on display.

Do take the free hour long tour with the Yeoman Warders or rather the Beefeaters, as they are more fondly known; you will be entertained with stories of intrigue and given a formal introduction to the Tower's most important residents- six ravens whose wings have been clipped keeping with the Tower's legend that says if the ravens take flight, then monarchy is doomed. This tour begins from the Middle Tower every half an hour, from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm.
