Allahabad is often described as "an ancient city with a contemporary touch". You will be charmed by the beautiful ghats, the Triveni Sangam and the typical Indian wamth and hospitality. The relaxed pace of life gives the traveller a much required break from the chaotic city life.
Located on confluence of three rivers-the invisible Saraswathi, the Yamuna and the Ganga (collectively known as Triveni), Allahabad is a famous pilgrimage center for Hindus. Also, the city has immense historical importance attached to it which is reflected through its grand monuments and rich culture. Steeped in culture and history, Allahabad is the hub of Hindu mythology as well as modern politics. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Brahma is believed to have descended on Earth in Allahabad, which was then called Prayag. He proclaimed it to be the King of all Pilgrimage Centres in India. Sangam, the confluence of holy rivers on the outskirts of the city is considered to be the most celebrated of the four Maha Kumbh Mela locations in India. One of the biggest attractions of Allahabad is the Kumbh Mela which is held once in 12 years and attracts thousands of devotees from all parts of India. The city also hosts the annual Magh Mela. At present, the city is also home to several popular universities. Some of the major attractions in Allahabad are the Allahabad Fort, Khusro Bagh and Triveni Sangam.

The city has traditionally been an important political and literary centre. Under British rule, it was the headquarters of the North-Western Provinces. The colonial and Mughal era buildings are major attractions in the city and draw a lot interest from tourists. Important events in India’s freedom struggle, like the emergence of the Indian National Congress in 1885, and the beginning of Mahatma Gandhi’s Non-Cooperation Movement in 1920, took place here. It speaks for the significance of Allahabad in Indian politics that seven prime ministers were either born here, or educated here or made it their constituency — among them Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi, VP Singh and Chandrashekhar. The Nehru family home was a major centre of the Indian freedom movement.
