Home to some famous temples, Bareilly offers a unique blend of modernity and history to its guests. Located in Uttar Pradesh, the bustling town greets you with cheerful faces and a natural charm.
The land of temples, mosques and natural beauty -- this is Bareilly for you. Situated on the banks of River Ramganga, it holds an important place in Hindu religion. Historically known by many different names, including Nath Nagari (Lord Shiva's abode), Ala Hazrat (named after an Islamic mausoleum), Zari Nagri and Sanjashya (from where Gautam Buddha descended to Earth). According to Hindu mythology, during the times of the Mahabharata, the region of Bareilly was known as Panchala -- the birthplace of Draupadi. It is also believed that Gautam Buddha once visited the fortress city of Ahichhattra in Bareiily. Ahicchattra is also important from the point of view of archaeology. The first signs of the Aryan advent in the Ganges-Yamuna Valley were discovered here only.

The history of Bareilly is an interesting, albeit long one. After the city was founded by Rajputs, it was taken over by Afghan settlers, giving rise to the Afghan Rohilla tribe. It was nearly after a century that the British East India Company came to the country and after a siege, the city was handed over to Shuja-ud-Daula.

The entire city is decked up with beautiful temples (such as Dhopeshwarnath Temple, Alakhnath Temple), holy Majars and a great shopping arcade. Famous for its Zari Zarkari work, Surma and exquisite Bamboo furniture, Bareilly is truly a shopper's delight. The city is a hub of cane (bans) production and that is the reason many confuse the name Bans-Bareilly with the bans market. In reality, the name Bans-Bareilly is derived from two princes -- Bansaldev and Baraldev, the sons of Jagat Singh Katehriya who founded the city in 1537. The foundation of the modern city of Bareilly was laid in 1657 by Mukrand Rai --the governor of Bareilly appointed by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.

Culturally, the city of Bareilly is a melting pot of music, food, art and dance. Bareilly's contribution to the world of Indian cinema is immense. The city has been immortalised in many Hindi film songs, including the famous "Surma Bareilly Vala". The city's street food is lip-smacking, especially the delectable seekh kebabs. A visit to the city would be incomplete without visiting the beautiful cantonment area.
