Bijapur, located in Karnataka, promises to take you back in the bygone era thorugh its grand historical monuments which have interesting tales to tell about that period. The city is home to several world-famous attractions like Gol Gumbaz, Ibrahim Rauza, Jumma Masjid and Malik-e-Maidan. Some other famous places to visit in Bijapur is Asar Mahal, Gagan Mahal and Barakaman among others.

Renamed Vijapura in 2014, Bijapur is a city famous for its rich historical and cultural legacy. Founded by the Chalukya Dynasty in 10-11 CE, the city was taken over by the Muslim rulers in the late 15 CE, thereby establishing the Deccan’s Islamic era. The city, having been ruled by various dynasties, is an amalgamation of cultures, art and history. This is the reason that a strong Hindu Shaivite culture dominates the city. The famous Lingayat Siddeshwara Festival takes place in January/February and draws a huge crowd every year. The city has a lesser known side to it, that of the Sufis. The Sufis of Bijapur were established during the reign of Qutubuddin Aibak.

The first sight of Bijapur, grubby and ramshackle, can be a let-down. But that’s till you see the monuments: the powerful Gol Gumbaz, the majestic fortifications, the graceful Ibrahim Rouza, the variety of mosques and mausoleums and the ingenuity of the waterworks. Going through Bijapur, you relive history. You become aware of prosperity and bloodshed, of piety and learning, of intrigue and architectural greatness. Bijapur Fort is the city’s major attraction and houses many buildings belonging to the Adilshahi dynasty. Another famous attraction and a marvel of acoustic architecture is the Gol Gumbaz. The tomb of Mohammed Adil Shah, every sound is echoed seven times inside the central chamber of the Gol Gumbaz. Ibrahim Rauza is the tomb of the Ibrahim Adil Shah II and served as the inspiration for the design of the Taj Mahal.

Bijapur derives its identity and character from the Adil Shahi dynasty that ruled it for close to 200 years. The initiator of Adil Shahi rule was Yusuf Adil Shahi (son of a Constantinople sultan), who established his rule in the late 15th century. The Adil Shahi rule lasted till Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb’s conquest of Bijapur in 1686. It thereafter kept changing hands between the Marathas and Mughals. Then the British established their hold in 1818, and let it rot. Bijapur is not beautiful by any stretch of imagination. But its monuments evoke the greatness of its past much more than any chocolate-box prettiness could.

Gol gumbaz is the most attractive place in Bijapur. It is a 7 floored building. The best experience is that we get 7 echoes of our sound in the dome. There is a museum nearby Gol gumbaz which must be visited to see various facts of that era. Bijapur ...... read more
