Perched atop a wide hill, the sprawling fort of Chittorgarh is a testimony to the grandeur of Indian architecture. Built over centuries by various rulers and known far and wide for the beauty of Queen Padmini, this fort was ravaged by Allahudin Khilji and his armies and now stands in ruins. Drive through the fort and experience the lost grandeur of erstwhile emperors and the beauty of the dry landscapes of Rajasthan.
Once a prosperous ancient city that was ravaged due to the fables circulating about Rani Padmini's beauty, Chittorgarh is a centre of inspiring and almost mythical stories. The residence of the erstwhile Rajput warriors, this fort is now largely in ruins. The sites of historical interest include the Vijay Stambha, a marvellous example of intricacy in stone sculpture, which was established by Rana Kumbha after his victory over the Muslim rulers of Malwa and Gujarat. Marking the architectural genius of the 15th century is the Meera Temple, which is beauteous is every dimension and a haven of inner peace. Meera, the biggest devotee of Lord Krishna is said to have composed many of her bhajans here, and the temple still seems to resound with her songs. On driving through the fort one can also see Rani Padmini's temple, which is closed to tourists now, and also visit the Rana Kumbha Fort which was destroyed by Allahudin Khilji's arm
