The beauty of Imphal is overshadowed by revolutionary battles fought in the city. Encompassed by lush green hills this quaint little city offers scintillating views that reverberates in the minds of travelers for a lifetime. Occupying a saucer-shaped valley, Manipur’s capital Imphal is surrounded by hills on which the state flower, the siroi lily, grows. It is your hub for exploring this state, which has forested stretches, the largest freshwater lake in the North-East and the rare brow antlered deer, the sangai.
Imphal is the capital city of Manipur. Complimented by numerous age old monuments and the worlds oldest existing Polo ground, the place is an attractive tourist destination where one can spend moments of tranquility in the lap of nature. The dense forests, the sprawling grasslands and lovely rivers add to the splendor of this raw and untouched place that awaits exploration. Even though the place has been constantly disturbed by insurgencies, the spirits of people soars high in this beautiful valley. This quaint city is home to the peaceful and hospitable Manipuri civilians that are basically divided into many ethnicities, among which the Meitei, Naga and Kuki can be mentioned. Meitei, the main community of Manipur, has an interesting Vaishnavite culture. The local people here believe in gender equality and many females are seen working in commercial places.

"one day tour of imphal"
reviewed on Jun 24 2014
imphal is the capital of manipur state in north east. it can be reached by flight from kolkatta. travel by road is bit difficult as the condition of roads after kohima in nagaland becomes patchy and blocked especially during rainy season. if u land by flight the nearst tourist attraction is the ISKON tempe which is hardly a kilometer from airport. the campus of iskcon is spacious and interiors of the temple is of pure teakwood giving a majestic look. the kangla fort is next to rajbhavan. the fort housed the assam rifle paramilitary till few years back. it now houses the state government offices. it also has huge garderns and muesum and a temple inside. the fort is surrounded by canals which are perputually filled with water. the canals were believed to be infested with crocodiles once upon a time. the next place is cemetry of second and first world war. a memorial is built for the brave soldiers of Indian National army. if time permits one can visit tangal market which the local market. one might get surprised as most of the vendors of road side shops are ladies and very rarely will one find local male looking after shops.
