Shravana Belgola, located in the Hassan district of Karnataka, is one of the most important pilgrimage cities in Jainism. Renowned for its skilled and unique architectural style, the majestic statue of Gommateshvara Bahubali here is largest monolithic statues in the world and is highly revered by the Jains.
Surrounded by two picturesque mountains, Chandragiri and Vindhyagiri, Shravana Belagola (Shravanabelagola) resonates with an astounding cultural heritage. The larger, Vindhyagiri, has the statue at its summit with a temple around it and several smaller temples below. The smaller hill, Chandragiri, has the older and richer monuments; the oldest date to the 8th century CE.

The empowering Bahubali (Gomatesvara) statue is considered to be the world's tallest monolithic statue. This statue of the Jain Saint Lord Gomateswara is 57 ft tall and is symbolic of the sculptural expertise of the Gangas of Talakkad. The Mahamastakabhisheka or ritual anointing of Gomatesvara is a grand event that takes place once in 12 years. The name, Sravana Belagola originates from the Kannad words implying "White Pond of the Shravana", true to which is a beautiful pond in the middle of the city offering an astounding view of the hamlet. A thriving tourist destination for its intriguing history and inspiring sculptures, the religious town is truly mesmerising.

An inscription of about the year 1180 at Sravanabelagola tells the story of Bahubali. Gomata or Bahubali was a son of Adinatha, the first Tirthankara. His brother Bharata, who ruled at Ayodhya, challenged his brothers to fight for the kingdom. Bahubali defeated Bharata but returned the kingdom to him. He then stood for a whole year in the Yogic pose (Pratima Yoga), which the statue also holds. But he could not attain peace because he was standing on his brother’s land. Bharata, understanding this, gave him back the kingdom, upon which he attained enlightenment. Both local inscriptions and histories say that Bhadrabahu, a Jaina acharya and descendant of Mahavira, predicted a famine in the north and moved from Ujjain to Sravanabelagola with 12,000 disciples. He was followed by Chandragupta Maurya, who attended to the acharya in his last days and thereafter attained samadhi himself.
