Udvada is a sacred town in Gujarat which is famous as a major Zoroastrian pilgrimage center across the world. This coastal town is dominated by the Parsi community and its rituals, and has largely kept aloof from excessive commercialisation, unlike the rest of Gujarat.
Udvada is a pastoral enclave in coastal Gujarat, dotted with storybook cottages and slumbering goats. In the town stands the Iranshah Atash Behram, the spiritual centre for Parsis and Zoroastrians, believed to be their oldest consecrated fire. ‘Parsi’ is an ethnic term that refers to the descendants of the band of Persian refugees who fled from the Arab conquest of their homeland, and arrived on the shores of Gujarat around 720 CE (see also p. 696).

They had vowed to establish a fire temple should they make it to land. History and belief tell us that the sacred fire they created has been burning continuously since then. The flame was moved from place to place given the community’s fears and tensions. It was finally established in Udvada on October 28, 1742. While the fire temple is out of bounds for non-Zoroastrians, the little streets and the entire bustle here are fascinating.

Apart from that, the beautiful Udvada Beach is absolutely a joy to be at. Anyone looking for a peaceful weekend where one can forget mundane life and relax while rejoicing delicious traditional food, this is the place to head to. The old Parsi houses in Udvada
reflect a distinct culture. There are double otlas or porches, little galis running behind, with their own private wells. Only about a hundred Parsis continue to live here.
