about tungnath temple

Built of solid granite slabs, the Tungnath temple resembles the ancient temple of Bageshwar and Jageshwar. This temple is the highest Shiva temples in the world, located at a height of 12,073 ft. Tungnath Temple is believed to be more than a 1000 years old and ranks 2nd amongst the five Panch Kedars.

The legend of Panch Kedar is associated with Pandava's search for Lord Shiva to achieve penance for killing their relatives in the battle of Mahabharata. Lord Shiva took the form of a bull and hid from the Pandavas. On being chased by them, he hid himself beneath the ground and later 5 parts of the bull emerged at 5 different places - each becoming one of the holy Panch Kedars.

The temple is quite small and built in the North Indian architectural style - quite similar to that of Kedarnath Temple. Guarding the entrance is Shiva’s bull, Nandi. Images of the Pandavas and Adi Shankaracharya grace the sanctum sanctorum, which contains a foot high lingam. Outside, there are two smaller temples dedicated to Parvati and Ved Vyas.
