about ucchi pillaiyar temple

The crowning glory of Rockfort, Ucchi Pillayar Temple, dedicated to Lord Ganesha, is one of India's most famous Lord Ganesha temple. With its foundation and walls steeped in mythology and legends, Ucchi Pillayar koil temple was built in the 7th century during the glorious years of the Vijayanagar empire by the Madurai Nayaks, essentially completing the work Pallavas had begun.

Housed in the same temple complex as Thayumanaswamy temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, both temples were built by the Madurai Nayaks. While Thayumanaswamy temple is bigger and grander, Ucchi Pillayar temple has its own evocative mysticism. Legend has it that the both the temples were niched within the massive rock outcropping by the Pallavas to mark the place where Lord Ganesha or Lord Vinayaka as he is also known, took refuge from King Vibhishana.

A beautiful temple widely known for its ancient architecture, Ucchi Pillayar temple offers some of the most incredible views of the city and river Kaveri snaking through.
