about umiam lake

Umiam Lake is a beautiful lake that sees numerous tourists from all over the country. The scenic spot is a part of a hydro-electric project, Umiam Umtru Hydro Electric Power Project, which resulted in the construction of this lake. Also known as Big Water or Barapani, this lake is an ideal place to experience the natural splendour of Shillong. The surrounding emerald-coloured hill is another add-on to the beauty of this place.

Apart from experiencing its enchanting beauty, you will have the opportunity to indulge in many activities. From kayaking to sailing, you will be spoilt for choice. There is a lovely stay option there with water sports facilities such as speed boating, water-skiing and rowing. The hills and the meadow around the lake are lovely. Also check out the horseshoe-shaped right in the middle of the town. Surrounded by green meadows and colourful flowerbeds, the lake makes for a good picnic spot.
