about uravu

A Non-profit organization located within Thrikkaipetta village, Uravu works as an economic and social enabler for the tribes that live in the surrounding regions. A unit of the State Bamboo mission, Uravu uses a synergy of indigenous knowledge and modern technology to run a thriving bamboo farm, production and bamboo crafts design centre.
Found in abundance in Wayanad and Uravu, bamboo has long been used by the indigenous tribes to make a number of practical and ornamental items like furniture, bags and handicrafts. Capitalising on a widely available resource, Uravu runs a bamboo processing unit employing the tribal population in addition to a training and design centre. Beneficial on a number of levels to the community and environment, Uravu's bamboo-based economic model has enabled the rural community, particularly women, to regain control over their natural resources and their livelihoods. For visitors the real lure is the shop selling varied bamboo products. You will find here bamboo utensils, CD covers, furniture, bags, masks and other unique handicraft items. You can also catch a glimpse of the people being trained in the nuances of bamboo crafts designing and planting.
