about vadakkunnathan temple

Shakthan Thampuran renovated the Shiva shrine (Vadakkunathan means Lord of the North) to the magnificent edifice it is today — a 10- acre temple complex with massive gopurams. Adi Shankaracharya is said to have spent his last years at  Vadakkunnathan Temple. The complex has some exquisite murals and wood carvings. At the beautiful koothambalam theatre, the ancient dramatic art form of Chakyarkoothu is frequently staged. The famous elephants of Vadakkunathan Temple are worshipped as Ganesha’s incarnations.
