about varaha temple

Lord Vishnu is closely associated with the image of the Preserver in Hindu mythology, where he takes on avatars to slay demons and kill all evil to preserve peace on earth. He is believed to have taken 9 such avatars, one of which is Varaha Temple, in whose honour this temple in Pushkar is dedicated. Legend has it that Lord Vishnu took the avatar of half boar-half man to descend to the earth and slay the demon Hiranyaksha, who threatened to destroy all life. His older brother, Hiranyakashyipu was also slayed by the Narsimha (half man, half lion) avatar of Lord Vishnu. Varaha Temple in Pushkar is believed to date back to the 12th Century, though much of it was destroyed by the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. Raja Sawai Jai Singh II of Jaipur renovated the temple and brought it to its current glory in the 18th Century. This temple continues the presence of the Holy Trinity of Hindu mythology in Pushkar, along with the temples dedicated to Lord Brahma and Shiva here.
