about vidisha

Located on the confluence of the Betwa and Beas rivers, Vidisha used to be the Sunga capital. Having witnessed the rule of the great Nagas, Guptas, and Satvahanas, the place holds immense historic value and was a major hub for commerce in the 6th century.

It’s dotted with white lime mortar temples, a 2nd-century shrine and a museum stocking 9th-century sculptures and terracotta objects. Not far north from Vidisha stands the Heliodorous (or Garuda) Pillar, known locally as the Khambha Baba. It carries inscriptions from 140 BCE. Heliodorous of Taxila, an envoy of the Indo-Bactrian king, Antialkidas, raised it. Also not to be missed are the Lohangi Rock, Gumbaz-ka-Maqbara and the 11 thcentury Bijamandal Mosque.
