about wankhede stadium

Wankhede Stadium is the third cricket stadium in Mumbai, built after the Bombay Gymkhana and the Brabourne Stadium. Its existence came into being due to a disagreement between the Bombay Cricket Association (BCA) and the Cricket Club of India (CCI). The former then built this 45,000 capacity stadium in the year 1974 and named it after the association's president, Barrister Sheshrao Wankhede.

The stadium hosted its first test series in 1974-75, where India lost against West Indies by 201 runs and Clive Lloyd scored an unbeaten 242 runs. Two seasons later India celebrated its first victory in this stadium over New Zealand. Amongst the high profile matches played here, the most memorable ones include Alvin Kallicharan's 187 and Sunil Gavaskar's 205 against the West Indies in the 1978-79 series, Vinod Kambli's third test match in 1992-93, where he scored 224 against England, and Ravi Shastri's unsurpassed fastest double century from 123 balls in 113 minutes with 13 fours and 13 sixes.

The stadium boasts of lightweight and heat-resistant cantilever Teflon roofs. There are no beam supports which ensure unobstructed views for the spectators. It has 7 stands, each named after a famous cricketer. Lately this stadium acts as the home grounds for the Mumbai Indians IPL team.
