about alwar

Perhaps the oldest city in the erstwhile kingdom of Rajasthan, Alwar was an important part of the Matsya territories in Viratnagar. The city was seized from the Rajputana by the Sultanate of Delhi around 12 BC. The historic city again came into prominence in 18 CE under the powerful rule of Pratap Singh. He was successful in resisting the Marathas and pushed back the armies of the Jats of Bharatpur and rulers of Jaipur, thus solidifying his kingdom.

Situated amidst the Aravali Range, Alwar represents a colorful blend of different cultures integrated in a single entity. Visitors take pride in the rich heritage (dating back to 1500 BC) of Alwar by visiting the majestic monuments and historical palaces that found base here. Although Alwar is famous for the Sariska Tiger Reserve and National Park, it is a relatively less frequented destination in Rajasthan. This means that those who mean business can actually explore the town in peace. There are many lakes, palaces, cenotaphs and towering forts in the city. The Alwar Fort or Bala Qila, is a majestic structure known for its grandeur and architectural brilliance. Jaisamand Lake and Sagar Lake are some popular tourist attractions here. Those interested in history and art must visit the Government Museum which is located inside the City Palace. Also, the hilly terrain has plenty of natural beauty and interesting wild life to make it a preferred destination for a relaxed and exciting vacation. The roadside views when you are a trip to Alwar deserves a special mention here as you will pass through stunning facades and gorgeous valleys which makes the journey even more interesting. Don't forget to make your way into the local market to buy some beautiful artifacts, ranging from printed saris to colorful bangles and even more!  Alwar is also known for its sweets, and a must-eat on your trip to the city should be the palang todh or the milk cake!
