about cuttack

Developed around the ancient Barabati Fort, Cuttack comes from the word Kataka that literally means The Fort. The city has witnessed various historical developments, from the Keshari dynasty to the Indian independence and is also one of the oldest cities of Orissa. Aptly bestowed with the title of the 'Silver city', it is famous for its unique silver filigree works and woven textiles. The amazing craftsmanship of the artists of Cuttack are visible by the stone embarkments on the banks of river Kathjori. Barabati fort, though now in ruins, is also a major attraction of this region.

Baliyatra, unique to the thriving city is a beautiful festival that marks the ancient trade links of the city with Java, Bali and Sumatra. Among other enthralling festivals, the Kite festival in the month of January is a spectacular one. The historical city is a buzzing commercial town along with a plethora of architectural and cultural wonders. Qadam-i-Rasool is a famous religious centre in the region. It is acclaimed by both Hindus and Muslims, and is decorated by high rising towers at each corners. This shrine also houses a music gallery, which was built in the 18th century AD.

Cuttack experiences a tropical climate with hot summers and extremely cold winters. The best time to visit this destination can be in the months of October and November.
