about gorakhpur

Famous for being the home of Gita Press, a publisher of sacred Hindu texts, Gorakhpur is an ancient city. It is named after saint Gorakhnath, who meditated here.  The place has many historic temples, the most famous one being the Gorakshanath Temple (Gorakhnath Math).  The famous Gorakhnath Temple is situated on the spot where the saint used to practice yoga.  The great mystic and poet, Saint Kabir is buried in Maghar, which is very close to Gorakhpur. Gorakhpur in itself does not have many tourist attractions, and most of the times, acts as a stopover on the road from Varanasi to Nepal. Kushinagar, the place where Buddha gave up his earthly form and died, is just a short distance away from Gorakhpur.

This place is also famous for its terracotta art and wood carving. Some parks and zoos line up the landscape of Gorakhpur, adding more charm to it. Another prominent site to visit is the Imambara, an 18th century dargah. Gorakhpur has a very famous planetarium called the Veer Bahadur Singh Planetarium which is a centre for knowledge and amusement. With four shows running everyday (except Monday), the planetarium is a good place for children to learn something new!
