about guruvayoor

Guruvayoor is is believed to be the holy abode of Lord Vishnu on earth and is a small town that has grown around a Krishna temple. The name of the city is derived from the name of three deities Guru, Vayu and Oor.Whether you are looking for heritage or for blessings, you will stop to listen to its legends and love its elephants. Historical references date the temple to the 14th century, but legend says that Guru (Teacher of the Gods) and Vayu (Lord of the Winds) rescued the Krishna idol in the temple from a flood and installed it in this place sanctified by Lord Shiva, who benevolently moved to Mammiyoor.

As night falls and a thousand oil lamps are lit around the temple, the stage is set for Krishnattam, a dance form almost exclusive to Guruvayoor, wherein popular fables from the life of Krishna are enacted. Watch an artist enact Krishna’s birth, the temple walls magically shimmering in the light of the lamps, and it’s easy to see why a legend says that the idol itself was moved to dance at a performance.
