about ratlam

The literal translation of Ratlam is the ‘City of Precious Jewels’. Known all over the country for the quality of gold produced in the district, swarms of people are seen pouring in for gold purchase especially during the wedding season. Popular for its religious monuments the Bilpakeshwara Temple and Kedareshwar Temple are believed to be highly sacred and see high magnitudes of pilgrimage the year round.

Founded in 1829, Ratlam was one of the first commercial cities established in Central India. The city quickly became known for trading in opium, tobacco, and salt. Today Ratlam houses several industries which manufacture copper wire, plastic ropes, chemicals and artificial oxygen, among other products. The Ratlami Sari is very popular among the women of India, and is a must buy when visiting. One must also try the Ratlami Sev, a scrumptious delicacy  of Ratlam which is today exported all over the world.

Not many of you would know that Ratlam's railway station is known to be one of the busiest railway stations in India. Interestingly, there are 4 rail tracks that pass through the city and lead to Khandwa, Ajmer, Delhi and Mumbai. Besides the main junction, this city is also known for its ancient monuments that have many stories to unfold. Earlier famous for the production of tobacoo, this place is now famous for perfumes, textile, pottery and copper wires.
