about surat

Surat, a port city, is ranked fourth among the fastest developing cities in the world. It is believed that this city was discovered in the end of the fifteenth century by a brahman named Gopi. He named the region Suryapur, which means the City of the Sun. Commonly known as the diamond heart of the world, 92% of the world's diamonds are cut and polished in Surat. Also, it is famous for its huge production of silk and is also known as the textile hub of the nation.

A port city and business hub that also houses historical monuments, Surat is the second largest city in all of Gujarat. Dating from the 16th century, the Surat Fort is a majestic structure built along the banks of River Tapi. Another ancient monument is the Mughal Sarai, an excellent example of Mughal architecture - beautiful facade, imposing arches and finely crafted parapets. For the religious lot there is the Chintanamani Jain Temple from the 17th century that is often taken as testimony for the vegetable colour drawing and wood carvings of Gujarat. The Lake Garden by the riverside is a great picnic spot and is frequented by tourists and residents alike. One of the main attractions of Surat is Dandi, which is around 45 km from Surat. This beach was the place where the salt satyagraha was started by Mahatma Gandhi. Saputara is another place where you can go out for a weekend. It is located at a distance of approximately 172 km from Surat and is the only hill station of Gujarat. Along with a few monuments of historic interest and beautiful gardens, it is a city pulsating with life and gusto. Don’t forget to dig into the delightful Gujarati cuisine which include Ghari, rasaawala khaman, Locho, petis, undhiyu and ,much more. Also, roadside kiosks popularly known as Laaris are quite popular in this city. All in all, Surat makes for a memorable family vacation, holding out something for everyone.
