about tirunelveli

Some of the most prominent religious landmarks dotting Tirunelveli include Christ Church, Holy Trinity Cathedral, and Nellaiappar Temple. The Christ Church remains a major church, while the Holy Trinity Cathedral is a huge structure capable of accommodating some 6000 members at once. Nellaiappar Temple is a twin temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi. The temple has two gopurams or towers and it is in the centre of Tirunelveli city. Surrounding the gopurams is a garden that was constructed in 1756 and in the garden is a square Vasantha Mandapam with 100 pillars. The musical pillars in the Mani Mandapam which produce sound in various pitches when struck (7th century AD by Nindrasir Nedumaran or Koon Pandyan), the Somavara Mandapam, the 1000 pillared hall, and the Tamra sabha with intricate wood work, and the Vasantha Mandapam are some of the noteworthy points in this temple. Another temple is Sri Varadharaja Perumal Temple, this temple is located on the banks of the perennial river Thamirabarani, in Tirunelveli Junction. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is one of the most ancient temples of the country. Sri Alzhiya Mannar Rajagopala Swamy Temple is an ancient temple which is about 1000 years old. Owing to its beauty and architecture, the temple is popular among the tourists and locals alike. Another beauty of this place is the Manimuthar Falls. It is located near Manjolai. The area of Manimuthar Falls is under Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve. River Manimuthar originates and joins the Thamirabarani near Kallidaikurichi. Vettuvan Koil is a Hindu temple built between the 8th and 9th century. It is part of Kalugumalai, an unfinished Pandyan monolith cave temple. The middle of the temple is sculpted from a single piece of rock. Only the top portion of the temple is completed. The temple has an entrance and centre hall for the main deity of Ganesha. At the top of the temple beautiful sculpture of Uma Maheswarar, Dakshinamurthy, Vishnu and Brahma can be found. There are around 122 sculptures in this rock cut temple.
