Over centuries, Tamil Brahmins settled down in Palakkad. The areas where they lived grew into what are called gramams or agraharams. While taking a stroll down Kalpathy, Kumarapuram, Ramanathapuram, Ambikapuram or Chokkanathapuram, one can easily look forward to soaking in the ambience of a gramam. Here, vedas and shastras are orally passed down from one generation to the other much like a Buddhist Monastery. The houses all follow a similar style of architecture, from the small artistically carved door complete with 6 to 7 foot-long latches to the quite thick wooden vasapadis (thresholds). Interestingly, toilets are still not located inside the main house.

While here, you'll find intricate kolam patterns in front of the houses and the sound of nadaswaram music hovering over the village from the temple. Lovingly prepared delicacies here include murukkus, cheeda, kozhukattas, devi payasams, sukhiyan, ela ada and chamanthi. Palakadu or Palakkad is home to around 108 agraharams. The Kerala government has declared them heritage sites and major architectural changes or rebuilding is banned.
