Corals are tiny aquatic animals that live in colonies in the sea. Each coral animal is called a polyp and lives inside a stony protective skeleton of limestone. Sensing danger, the polyp can withdraw into its cup, which is permanently attached to the surface below. So corals are animals, but are attached to the sea surface. No wonder, they have a lot of people confused.

Many thousands of coral polyps are connected to form a colony. New colonies grow over dead ones, and eventually, over thousands of years, the huge limestone mass and living coral form a reef of many shapes and colours. The colours, for which corals are so famous, are provided by algae living in them. Coral is also a habitat for many sea creatures – anemones, sponges, fish, crabs, shrimps, sea urchins and more. So the coral colony is rich, varied and colourful.

In India there are only four major regions where coral reefs are found — Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar, Gulf of Kutch and Gulf of Mannar.
