Want to explore the religious hotspot of the country, Haridwar, but don't know how to reach? If yes, then the following options will give you a headstart. Haridwar is around 200 km away from the capital city, Delhi and is majorly well connected by rail and road network to major parts of the country. If you are just going to the place for exploring it, then you should avoid travelling to Haridwar in the Hindu month of Sawan, i.e. around July because during this month, there is heavy crowd and consequently many important roads are blocked. Let's look at the different means of reaching the place.

  • By plane
The airport nearest to Haridwar is Dehradun's Jolly Grant Airport which is around 20 km away from the main town. The airport has twice daily service to Delhi on Air India and King Fisher flights which make it all the more accessible an option. The airport is well connected to town through road and can be reached by taking a cab or a taxi at reasonable rates of around INR 300 which are negotiable. It would be better if you take a pre-paid cab from the airport which has fixed rates but are more reliable as far as security goes.

  • By train

If you are not a plane person and like to travel through trains, then reaching Haridwar is going to be a piece of cake for you. Haridwar Junction Railway Station (IR station code : HW) is well-connected to different parts of the country by frequent trains to Delhi in every 4-5 hours and Dehradun in every hour. Also, there are a few trains per day to Rishikesh. However, in the case of Rishikesh, buses are faster and frequent and hence a much more efficient way of travelling. The train station is located on the southern side of town which is within walking distance to most of the hotels and is around a 2 km hike away from Hari-ki-Pauri. Some of the most famous rail routes that can be used to reach Haridwar are Shatabdi Express and Mussoorie Express that can be boarded from New Delhi; Doon Express that can be boarded at Howrah, Varanasi and Lucknow; Chennai-Dehradun Express from Chennai and Delhi and Hemkunt Express boarded from Jammu.

  • By bus
Haridwar's bus station is located a stone's throw away from the train station. The stand has buses coming from all the major parts of the northern part of the country, i.e. Delhi, Dehradun, Shimla and Lucknow at timely intervals. While booking the tickets, you should always look for the condition of the bus and should see if you are comfortable with the seats that are available. There is always a shortage of A/C buses in summers so you should plan accordingly. If chosen the right bus, the ride is going to be an experience in itself and if not, then the long and bumpy ride will take a serious toll on your mood and body.

So how to reach part is done. Are you thinking of the next step?
