So already in Singapore and now set to explore the place to the fullest? Well, you must be wondering how to do that. Being a small place with ample means of local transport, getting around is a breeze here, while extensive public wi-fi connectivity ensures that information is literally accessible anytime anywhere. Means of transport within Singapore are:

  • Rail

The MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) and LRT (Light Rail Transit) are the backbone of Singapore’s public transportation system and work out to be pretty cheap.
  • Bus

You will be pleased to know that there are a host of bus services which are available all across Singapore. These are affordable albeit slow means of getting around in Singapore. It is best to use ez-link or Nets Flashpay card for paying bus fare.

  • Cabs/Taxi

Opt for private cabs or taxis in Singapore if you want to save time but don’t mind spending on the local transport thing. These run on meters and are more well suited for groups of at least four passengers. This way, per head expenditure can be cheaper than rail service.

  • Trishaws

Want to experience a rickshaw ride in Singapore? Well, here is your chance! Just hop on to a Trishaw or rickshaw. These are huge three-wheeled tri-cycles and are mainly used for covering short distances under a 5 km radius.

  • Boat

Experience the interesting boat ride in Singapore as the place easily allows you to do that. Boats are a great way to mix commuting with sightseeing. In fact, many visitors do hire bumboats offering point to point tours on Singapore River.

  • Car

Given the wide availability of cheap public transport in Singapore, people usually do not hire cars as it is quite expensive. However, car hire is the best bet for a flexible sightseeing schedule at one’s own pace. You can opt for the cars if you want to explore Singapore at your own speed.

Singapore is well connected with buses, rail network, and cabs. A convenient way to get around is to buy the Nets Flash Pay card or EZ-link contactless RFID farecard. These cards are rechargeable and work on lines similar to those of Japan Railway's IC cards, Washington DC's SmarTrip card, London Underground's Oyster card and Hong Kong's Octopus card. The cards can be used both on MRT trains and city buses at a discounted rate.
